Jeff Lemire's SWEET TOOTH Ending with December's Issue #40

Sweet Tooth #36

Jeff Lemire's Vertigo series Sweet Tooth is ending with December's issue #40, and the writer/artist is making it known that it's his call.

"I want to make one thing really clear…Sweet Tooth is not being cancelled," Lemire wrote on DC's official Vertigo blog. "The decision to end it at #40 is entirely my choice."

Issue #40 will be double-sized and fully painted, and feature the climax of "The Wild Kingdom," the book's final arc that starts with August's issue #36.

"I suppose I could have stretched it out a bit longer," Lemire wrote. "I could have had a few more obstacles pop up along the way to Alaska to lengthen the journey (and the series), but it just felt like it was time."

Sweet Tooth began in 2009, and tells the story of hybrid Gus — a 9-year-old with antlers — and his human protector, Jepperd, in a post-apocalyptic world. Lemire, who also writes New 52 titles Animal Man and Justice League Dark for DC, is one of five nominees for "Best Writer" at this year's Eisner Awards.
