Will Talia al Ghul Be A Villain In The Dark Knight Rises?

Well before The Dark Knight left movie theaters, with the foregone conclusion that a $1 billion box office film would have a sequel, fans of the film have been speculating (and wanting to know) who the villain(s) would be in the next film.

While it’s been confirmed that The Riddler will not be the villain in Batman 3 (now known as The Dark Knight Rises), speculation is heating up that Hugo Strange could be a villain (played by Tom Hardy). The jury is still out regarding whether or not director Christopher Nolan will bring long time femme fatale Catwoman, but now we have the possibility that another well-known (to Batman fans) female might be the villain/love interest: Talia al Ghul.

Of course the latest incarnation of the Batman movies began with Liam Neeson as Ra’s al Ghul, so this would make for a decent tie-in and continuity with Batman Begins. The character was killed at the end of that film, but in the comics he is immortal. It would make sense within the established movie universe for Talia to want revenge against Batman for the death of her father.

But where is this Talia al Ghul news coming from? If you follow superhero movie news, you may recall that Teresa Palmer had been cast in the now-dead Justice League movie as… Talia al Ghul. Teresa (seen recently in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) spoke to MovieWeb about the fact that Chris Nolan is looking for female leads for the next Bat-film.

She had this to say:

"I've definitely put the feelers out there with my agents and that would be something I would be really glad to have happen...I doubt I would be one of the actresses high up on Nolan's list. I think they are definitely going after woman with a much bigger profile than I."

"It is the longest shot in history for sure but I've put my name out there with my agents and things. So we'll see who ends up doing that role. My managers made the phone calls but I'm pretty sure that they will end up going with a big name girl."

That’s certainly a long way from any sort of official confirmation that Talia will be in the film, but it’s not exactly “my agent contacted them and it’s not going to happen because that character isn’t in the movie.”

Speculative? Certainly. But she (Talia) would make for a fresh villain/love interest as opposed to using Catwoman again. For now, all we can do is play a guessing game – eventually Nolan and company will make their official announcement – but it’s fun speculating in the meantime.

The Dark Knight Rises will be in theaters and IMAX on July 20, 2012.
