Warner Bros. have decided to release Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) on home video early in light of the growing COVID-19 (commonly known as Coronavirus) pandemic, as reported by Variety.
While the specific, originally-intended home video release date is not specified, the Hollywood trade reports that Birds of Prey will be available digitally for $19.99 beginning March 24 on platforms such as Amazon and iTunes. Rental availability will be coming in April, according to WB.
This comes as major theater chains such as AMC and Regal are closing theaters, and other studios have rushed the home video release of several recent films. Birds of Prey director Cathy Yan seemingly presaged this Birds of Prey announcement, tweeting out her support for the idea earlier on Monday.
I would not be opposed to putting Birds of Prey on VOD earlier. https://t.co/TrKynikHLx— Cathy Yan (@CathyYan) March 16, 2020
According to Variety, Birds of Prey earned $177 million at the global box office to date against an $85m budget.
