Marvel Studios has hired the animation studio Squeeze to create half of the Disney+ animated series What If...?'s first season. First reported by Variety, production on What If...? has been underway for sometime, with visuals shown at the 2019 D23 Expo. It's unclear if Squeeze's work as among that footage, and what other studios (or in-house departments at Disney) are animating the remainder of the series.
"Marvel was looking for a world-class animation studio to come up with a fresh and unique style that would be in keeping with their brand essence," said Squeeze CEO/co-founder Denis Dore in the announcement. "We really clicked, right from our initial talks in Los Angeles last year, and they loved our proposal. I’m thrilled that our artists’ creativity and talent resonated so strongly in Hollywood."
Squeeze comes to this after frequently doing animation for video games such as The Avengers: Battle for Earth and movies such as Transformers; Age of Extinction.
What If...? will explore alternate histories inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and feature voicework by MCU starrs including Robery Downey Jr., Chadwick Boseman, Hayley Atwell, Jeff Goldblum, and Michael Douglas.
What If...? is scheduled to debut in summer 2021 on Disney+.
