Rosario Dawson has been cast as Alma Ortego, the lead role in HBO Max's DMZ pilot, according to Deadline. The series is based on the Vertigo series of the same name by writer Brian Wood and artist Riccardo Burchielli.

Whereas the DMZ comic centered on a reporter named Matty, HBO Max's DMZ reportedly centers on Dawson's Ortego - a "fierce medic ... who goes on a harrowing journey of saving lives while desperately searching for her lost son."

Ava DuVernay is producing DMZ as part of her overall deal with WarnerMedia, which also includes the New Gods movie. DuVernay is pencilled in to direct the pilot, working with showrunner Roberto Patino.

A release date for DMZ is premature, as HBO Max have not picked up the show past the pilot at this stage.
