Marvel Comics will set the stage for its upcoming Empyre event with a pair of one-shots focusing on the Avengers and Fantastic Four – the classic enemies of the Kree and Skrull, respectively.

In Empyre: Avengers #0 from Al Ewing and Pepe Larraz, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will travel to the “Green Area of the Moon” for a cosmic battle. Meanwhile in Empyre: Fantastic Four #0 from Dan Slott and R.B. Silva, the FF will bear witness to the “final battle” of the Kree/Skrull War, and meet “the Profiteer,” a previously unknown Elder of the Universe.

The two one-shots will bear interlocking covers by Jim Cheung.

Interestingly, on the cover of Empyre: Avengers, Hulkling is depicted fighting alongside the Avengers as opposed to the Kree or Skrull. This is notable because, while Hulkling has served as an Avenger, notably in Ewing’s New Avengers run which sowed the seeds of Empyre, the crossover places him as the emperor of the newly-formed Kree/Skrull alliance.

"Empyre starts with a bang - the Avengers and the Fantastic Four meeting a threat from two sides, with two different strategies - and these #0 issues will let set readers up to see how they got there,” said Ewing in the announcement of the one-shots. “As the Avengers meet with old friends, and the Fantastic Four run into some brand new ones, both teams face some stark choices and a test of their character as a team. It's the best way to get inside the heads of the Avengers and the Fantastic Four before the main action begins."

Empyre: Avengers #0 and Empyre: Fantastic Four #0 are due out in April.
