Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) star and producer Margot Robbie says that Jared Leto's Joker won't appear in Birds of Prey - even in a flashback or cameo.
Though the film follows the end of her relationship with Leto's Joker, established onscreen in Suicide Squad, Robbie tells Variety their pairing will be left in the past - though the trade doesn't quote her on the matter directly.
As for the other big screen Joker currently making waves, Robbie says Joaquin Phoenix's titular Joker from last year's unlikely blockbuster might be too real for Birds of Prey's "heightened" comic book reality.
“[Joaquin Phoenix] did a phenomenal job," Robbie says. “I feel like the Joker film was much more grounded. Ours is different. It’s heightened.”
Joker director Todd Phillips recently spoke of a sequel to the film, saying while it's on the table, it's not in the works yet. Meanwhile Robbie is also scheduled to appear as Harley Quinn in director James Gunn's The Suicide Squad - which might open the door to a reprise of Leto's Joker yet.
Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is due out in theaters February 7.
