Victoria Park's Kamilla Hwang is, in many ways, the optomistic light in the CW's The Flash - and given the current "Crisis on Infinite Earths", Team Flash needs that now more than ever.
Park's character is relatively new to the show - and is also new to canon, as its one of the few from the show not based on something from the DC comic books. Originally introduced in season 5 as Cisco Ramon's girlfriend, Park and her character's role in The Flash has grown - even landing a gig as a photogropher for Central City Citizen.
As The Flash forges through "Crisis" and preps for the second half of season six, Park spoke with Newsarama about her character, the growth in the past year, the 'Kamisco' relationship, and what DC actors she'd like to work with - and whose powers she'd like to try out.
Newsarama: Victoria, let’s jump straight into it - what can you say about your character's relationship with Cisco in the next half of the season?
Victoria Park: I guess the last big episode was episode five, when we were finally able to express how we felt about one another and things between them have been going pretty well and that I think you can expect that to continue. I can't really release too many details, but you can expect that to continue. Let's hope.
Nrama: Why do you think their dynamic works so well?
Park: Kamilla is really stabilizing, like grounding presence for Cisco, especially because on the show Team Flash is always in the middle of some crisis, I mean, not to mentioned, the coming big crisis – the crossover episodes. So, it's really important that she’s a stable presence for him. I think that she’s really fun and witty and that she can hang and keep up with that. And I like to think that they have a lot of fun together when they're not in the middle of saving the world.
Nrama: What’s your favorite aspect about Kamilla’s character?
Park: I really love her loyalty. She’s shown that she's always there for Cisco and she's always there for her friends and her people. And I really love that about her. And I also really like that she's got this fun kind of spunky, sassy side, which is really fun.
Nrama: On a show full of superpowers would you like to have any yourself and if so which ones?
Park: I would love to have powers. I don't know if it's going to happen, but I think it would be really cool. I always joke around with the rest of the cast that I'm the only one that doesn't have powers and how it's not fair that everyone else has them.
If I had to pick somebody’s powers, I actually think Vibe’s powers are the coolest, but I don't know how that would work out on the show if Kamilla suddenly ended up with the power Cisco gave up. Like I can't imagine that would go well. But I think who knows. That's not a spoiler by the way. I'm just saying that'd be fun for me.
Nrama: That would be a fun episode to see how Cisco would react to her having his powers.
Park: Right! I think it would just be a really interesting thing. That would just be me having fun.
Nrama: And in the same vein, many of the characters on The Flash are based on comic characters. What's it like playing a character not from the comics?
Park: I think in some ways it would be so cool to be able to play a character from the comics, but I really loved the freedom of not being a character that already exists. We can just make up whatever we want to make of her and she’s a new character and we really have the full freedom to do what we want. It’s a really fun place to play around.
Nrama: Is there a character you’d like to interact with more on the show?
Park: I'm really fortunate to have been able to work with I think everybody at this point. Two days ago, that episode, I got to work pretty much exclusively with Dani Nicolet, who plays Cecile. We had so much fun. I would love to have more time with her. I also ever get to work with Jesse or Tom. It'd be really fun to work with them more as well. But I mean, I love working with everybody. It's fun to kind of switch it up.
Nrama: Would you like to work more with Team Flash as a whole?
Park: Of course. Wouldn’t you? I mean, the few days that we have everyone together on set are really rare and they’re so much fun. And I mean Team Flash is really awesome. Who wouldn't want to be a part of the team?
Nrama: What do you think Kamilla brings to the team?
Park: She definitely brings her optimism. Like I said earlier, being that grounding presence for Cisco and being able bring a lightness to the team, in the mix of all the crisis heaviness. Also, she's really smart and we'd like to see that in a couple of episodes and so she picks up things really quickly. We were joking around on set the other day that maybe she's the photographer, maybe she has a photographic memory and that's how she just knows everything. It's pretty cool that she picks up all of the technical aspects of the team and is able to fill in where need be.
Nrama: Are there any characters from the other shows you’d like to share scenes with?
Park: Yeah, I would really love to work on Supergirl because I've heard Melissa Benoist is just amazing, like an amazing person and I've never met her and I'd love to work with her.
Nrama: Now I don't know if you're in "Crisis on Infinite Earths" or not, but would you want to be part of a crossover in the future and what do you think that that would look like?
Park: I don't know. I mean, I wasn't able to be a part of the crossover this year. Although, they're going to be really amazing and I'm really excited for everyone to see them. But I don’t know what next year’s crossover is going to be. I'm just as interested to know as you are.
Nrama: Will we see Kamilla more at the Central City Citizen and as a photographer?
Park: Yes, I think I'm allowed to say that. I'm not allowed to say much about it, but I can say yes. It's been really fun. I love that she's getting to explore her photography from the point of view of a reporter as opposed to previously it was from more of an artistic perspective. So, I think being able to explore that side of her has been really fun, and you'll definitely get to see more of that in the back half of the season.
Nrama: To wrap, what would you like to see from your character for the future? What can you tease?
Park: That’s a really good question. I would love to see obviously more growth with her relationship with Cisco because that's really fun, but also personally, I would really like to see her friendships with the rest of the team grow, especially the other women. We have so many amazing female characters on the show. I would love to see developed friendships with each of those ladies.
