A new 2022 Star Wars film is expected to be announced in January, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Citing unnamed sources, THR reports that Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has already chosen the director for the project, which would occupy the December 16, 2022 release date previously reserved for the now-aborted Star Wars film by Game of Thrones showrunners Dan Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
Earlier this week Disney revised their theatrical release calendar, but kept the 2022 date - as well as December 20, 2024 and December 18, 2026 - on the books.
According to the Hollywood trade's sources the December, 2022 film will not be the kick-off to The Last Jedi's Rian Johnson's planned trilogy.
A January 2020 announcement would come in the wake of December 20's Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker.
