New Year, New Marvel Comics1 of 12
January 2020 brings back many classic Marvel characters, locations, and relationships - all while turning things just a little more on their ear.
You can read all about it right here in Marvel Comics' just-released January 2020 solicitations while we run down all the hot goss that we could dig up.
Greetings From Fabulous Madripoor2 of 12
Kate Pryde and crew may have their work cut out for them in the wild waters around Krakoa, but in January's Marauders #5, the team will set sail for that hive of scum and villainy known as Madripoor.
What awaits them there is still unknown - but the solicitation implies that the Hellfire Trading Company's Black King Sebastian Shaw has been up to no good...
Missing Titles3 of 12
Marvel's January solicitations don't feature an issue of Savage Sword of Conan, which was last solicited with December's #12. Meanwhile, December's Conan the Barbarian #12 seems to have been resolicited for January 2020.
While Invaders wasn't solicited for January, writer Chip Zdarsky confirmed to Newsarama that title will come to an end with December's #12.
Last Remains4 of 12
January's Amazing Spider-Man #37 seems to be gearing up to another big story titled "Last Remains".
As for what "Last Remains" may entail, it could be the big moment for the mysterious Kindred - who clues indicate may be Peter Parker's longtime pal Harry Osborn.
Mystique Fulfills Her Destiny5 of 12
At the end of HoX/PoX, Xavier promised Mystique he'd resurrect Destiny - even though she can sense Moira's presence and disrupt his plans.
Now, it seems Xavier's plan to foist Destiny's resurrection down the road may come home to roost in January, with the solicitation for X-Men #6 saying simply "Mystique goes to extraordinary lengths to get what she wants…"
Welcome Back6 of 12
A bunch of Marvel mainstays will return to the fold in January, starting with a newly revamped Ghost who may be an actual ghost in Strikeforce #5.
Then, the Wrecker returns (with a potentially cosmic power upgrade) in Dr. Strange #2, while former Generation X member Husk joins the cast of Fallen Angels #6 that same week.
Also, Immortal Hulk #30 flashes back to the pre-Marvel monster comic version of "Hulk", billed as "The Hulk That Was" (a.k.a. Xenmu the Titan), and Doctor Doom #4 brings back an unnamed "forgotten hero."
(Gilgamesh, is that you?)
Claremont 3D7 of 12
Marvel is bringing the 3D treatment to 1988's Wolverine #10 by Chris Claremont, John Buscema, and Bill Sienkiewicz. The technique, which you can see in the recently-released Amazing Spider-Man: Venom 3D #1 is an interesting experience - although maybe more for casual fans than ardent comic readers.
But the idea of John Buscema and Bill Sienkiewicz in 3D? We might be open to being wrong.
How will it look in 3D? Time will tell - but we're betting it won't be that classic red and blue headache-vision.
Battle for the Starbrand8 of 12
Marvel's Starbrand is one of those powersets and mantles that passes from host to host - and now it seems in January a variety of Marvel characters will compete to decide the fate of now wielder-less cosmic power.
The solicitation for Avengers #29 places Captain Marvel, Firebrand, Ghost Rider, and Silver Surfer in the fight for the Starbrand - while also putting Black Widow in the War Machine armor to become the "War Widow."
Love Is Blind9 of 12
Matt Murdock and Elektra have had a volatile series of off-again-on-again romances, and it seems they'll be back together again - at least as allies - in January.
The solicitation for Daredevil #16 says Matt Murdock and Elektra will "rekindle their alliance" - but Kingpin is back in the mix too. And where those three meet, love and tragedy usually follow.
A New Scourge10 of 12
The costumed threat that's been plaguing Marvel's underworld in Captain America will be confirmed as a new version of the Scourge.
Whoever is under the mask this time (last time it was a mind-controlled D-Man), the villain will come face-to-face with Steve Rogers in January's Captain America #18.
Avenger(s) Down11 of 12
Captain Marvel's heel turn has been in the works for some time now, but January's Captain Marvel #14 puts at least one more Avenger in her crosshairs after previous solicits mention her taking down an Avenger.
January may pile the red marks on Carol's ledger, as the solicit text states she's put "two Avengers down."
As for who - well, could she be strong enough to kill She-Hulk, who she's fighting on the cover?
