Press Release

Supermom: Expecting Trouble is an action comedy about a superhero named Voltra who is out to stop her archnemesis from taking over the world. There’s just one problem: she’s pregnant... and he’s the father.

Published by Action Lab with the first issue hitting the shelves in December, Supermom is five issues of big laughs and crazy fights. There’s evil monkey clowns, giant flesh monsters, pyromaniac romantics, a doom-bringing opera singer and (worst of all) a superhero baby shower for Voltra to survive.

Making things even worse is the fact that her little sister/sidekick (Pearl, AKA ‘Digi-Girl) thinks it’s hysterical that her big sis has been knocked up by a supervillain and her mom’s definitely going to kill her when she finds out. And in world where superpowers are passed on through genetics the question of “Who will the baby take after, the mother or the father?” is taken to a whole new level in this case, especially as it looks like the baby might be taking after daddy...

This has all been put together by an award-winning international creative team: writer Gordon Mclean (Scotland), artist Caio Oliveira (Brazil), colorist Fahriza Kamaputra  (Indonesia) and letterer Frank Cvetkovic (USA).

Gordon: “This is most personal and emotion-laden comic project I’ve ever worked on because of how it came to be. My Uncle David was a big supporter of my work and loved Caio and I’s previous comic. He was always asking when we’d be making another one and my reply was always that we just didn’t have the money. When my Uncle David passed he left me money in his will to make another comic with Caio.

“My mother Jean was a big influence on the comic. A lot of story beats are a “superhero spin” on my memories of her, especially when she was pregnant with my little sister. I kept this secret because I wanted it to be a surprise when I put issue one in her hand and revealed the truth. I never got the chance. Cancer took her just like it took my Uncle David.

“I’ve done everything I can to try and make this comic the best I possibly can because of the wonderful woman who brought me into the world and inspired so much of Supermom and the kindly uncle who showed me such heartbreaking generosity and support in his final months.  I hope I’ve done them both proud.”

Issue 1 is now available to pre-order from Diamond. Previews code: OCT 191470. Issue 1 hits the shelves of comic stores around the world on December 18th but we ask anyone who’s interested to please consider pre-ordering our comic as it’s the only way to guarantee a copy and would help us enormously.
