Marvel Comics' Iron Man 2020 plans have been revealed, with Tony Stark's adopted brother Arno Stark taking the mantle of Iron Man next year in a new six-issue events from writers Dan Slott and Christos Gage and artist Pete Woods. Announced during Marvel's Next Big Thing panel at New York Comic Con, Iron Man 2020 will pick up where the current Tony Stark: Iron Man leaves off in its December 2019 finale - and will include tie-in titles to be announced in the coming months.
"Everything we have been doing has been building to this," Slott said during the panel.
Originally introduced in 1984's Machine Man limited series, the then-future Iron Man of 2020 (Arno Stark) visited the present day - and come January, we'll be in 2020, and Iron Man 2020's present day.
"Like the inexorable turning of pages on a calendar, we’ve been building up to the arrival of 2020 and the advent of Arno Stark as Iron Man ever since this latest run began!," said Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. "Here, all of the larger themes we’ve been playing with will come to the fore in a big, sweeping, epic action movie that anyone can enjoy!"
Recent teasers have hinted that Tony Stark will die this year, and Marvel has now confirmed his long-lost brother Arno will return to the limelight and take over as Iron Man.
"How he tackles the responsibilities that come with being the armored Avenger will have monumental effects on the Marvel Universe," Marvel explains in a press release.
The series will also push further into the idea of artificial intelligence and robots - something Slott has been hitting on since he launched Tony Stark: Iron Man in 2018. Iron Man 2020 will feature Marvel robot characters such as Vision, Jocasta, and even Albert and Elsie-Dee in what's being framed by the publisher as a "Robot Revolution."
Here's the solicitation. Slott says Iron Man 2020 #1 will have a "5th flourescent ink cover."
