In this week’s Amazing Spider-Man #29 from writer Nick Spencer and artists Franceso Manna and Carlos Lopez, Peter Parker finds himself in an all too familiar position with his paramour Mary Jane Watson as he works to stop a tragedy while she prepares to leave for Los Angeles (and her upcoming solo series).
But this scene ends with a very different twist for Peter and MJ – one that could have big ramifications for the people in their lives.
Spoilers ahead for Amazing Spider-Man #29.
As MJ packs for her two month trip to Los Angeles to star in a movie (and her own solo series), Peter jets off to run some errands as Spider-Man and visit Aunt May for counsel on his relationship.
But as May is reminding Peter of their ups and downs and their commitment to each other, Theresa appears and asks for Spider-Man’s help rescuing one of her fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, currently a captive of the Chameleon. Peter goes with her – but is too caught up in the mission to meet MJ at the airport before she leaves for L.A.
Peter and MJ reconnect that night via video chat – MJ reassures Peter that she understands what he’s going through, and has accepted this aspect of his life as Spider-Man. But as they hang up, Peter reveals he had another plan for their parting.
He opens his hand to reveal a wedding ring – signaling his apparent plan to propose to MJ once again.
What ramifications their potential engagement or re-marriage could have remains to be seen. Would getting married again undo Mephisto’s “One More Day” spell and kill Aunt May, Harry Osborn, and rewrite history again?
Amazing Spider-Man #30, a tie-in to "Absolute Carnage", is due out September 25.
