Spoilers ahead for September 11's Archie: The Married Life 10th Anniversary #2.
In Michael Uslan's alt-future where Archie Andrews and Veronica Lodge get married, a tragedy will befall that family in next week. Archie: The Married Life 10th Anniversary #2, Hiram Lodge - Veronica's father, and by extension Archie's father-in-law - dies unexpectedly following a heart attack.
Archie informed Newsarama of the upcoming event, and we spoke with Uslan about what's happening - and his own feelings regarding the character of Mr. Lodge.
"To me, as an Archie reader growing up in the 1950s and '60s, Mr. Lodge represented a removed father whose love for his daughter most often materialized as giving her anything she wanted," Uslan told Newsarama. "Rather than spending time with her or taking an interest in her daily life, he simply expressed his love by writing checks."
Originally created in 1942 by Bob Montana for Archie's Pep Comics #31, Hiram P. Lodge grew to be one of the major thorns in the side of Archie Andrews and the Riverdale gang. Called 'Mr. Lodge' by the teens, the character was based on the real-life Massachusetts policital family, the Lodges - who Montana previously painted a mural for.
"In Archie: The Married Life 10th Anniversary #2, he has clearly taken Archie under his wing and tried to mold him into the same sort of businessman he was - driven by success and devoted to the dollar," Uslan continued. "But there's a conflict there as the balancing act between work and family weighs more heavily on Archie. This contrast comes to a head in the stunning conclusion to issue #2."
"The events of this issue will have an explosive impact, forcing Archie to change his life as Veronica’s life is unexpectedly and permanently transformed," said Uslan. "Tragedy, drama, soap opera, conflicts: it all begins here with the end of Mr. Lodge's 77-year run as one of Riverdale's most iconic characters."
While Archie revealed to Newsarama that Lodge would die in September 11's Archie: The Married Life 10th Anniversary #2, they have left out the part of the preview which reveal the father's final words of advice to Veronica and Archie.
