Director Neill Blomkamp has announced his departure from MGM's planned RoboCop Returns film, citing scheduling issues with the studio.

"Off RoboCop. I am shooting new horror/thriller and MGM can’t wait / need to shoot RoboCop now," Blomkamp tweeted. "Excited to watch it in theaters with other fans. N"

Details on Blomkamp's "new horror/thriller" have not been revealed.

RoboCop Returns has been described as a direct sequel to 1987's original, disregarding the subsequent sequels, TV show, and 2014 remake. The writers of the original film, Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner, were hired back to adapt an unused 1980s spec script they wrote for this new film.

Blomkamp said in 2018 he hoped that original series star Peter Weller would reprise his role as the titular RoboCop, although a deal was never announced.

MGM has not announced a release date for RoboCop Returns.
