Catherine Hardwicke has signed on to direct Constantin Film's Heathen, according to Variety. Based on the Natasha Alterici comic book series of the same name published by Vault Comics, the Heathen movie is being written by Kerry Williamson.
"Heathen follows Aydis, a viking, warrior, outcast, and a self-proclaimed heathen. Aydis is a rescuer of the immortal Valkyrie Brynhild and battler of demons and fantastic monsters," reads Vault's description of the series. "Aydis is a woman. Born into a time of warfare, suffering, and subjugation of women, she is on a mission to end the oppressive reign of the god-king Odin."
Hardwicke is best known for directing 2008's Twilight film, and was a production designer previous to that on films such as Tank Girl and Tombstone. She recently directed the film Miss Bala, and is signed on to direct an produce a TV adapation of Maggie Stiefvater's "The Raven Cycle" prose novels for Warner Bros. Domestic Television.
"The entire Heather team and I are incredibly excited about adapting my little lesbian viking comic for film," said Alterici when the movie was first optioned. "I've been a film fanatic for longer than I've been a comics fans, and that my working in one format would lead to another is nothing less than a dream come true."
Vault Comics' CEO Damian Wassel is listed as one of Heathen's executive producers.
