Warner Bros.'s Joker skipped Comic-Con International: San Diego, but will be running on the film festival circuit beginning with a world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The event, scheduled to run September 5 to 15, will be Joker's first public screening.
Variety, who broke the news, describes TIFF as "a launching pad for awards season hopefuls" and includes screenings for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Ford vs. Ferrari, The Goldfinch, Just Mercy, The Two Popes, and others.
"In a fractious social moment, a lot of these stories are about characters looking for empathy or ways to connect," said TIFF's artist director/co-head Cameron Bailey. "These films don’t directly address what’s happening, but there seems to be a recognition that we are living in difficult times."
Joker is set to open in general theaters October 5.
