Archie Comics has spun off its classic Riverdale characters in several genre-bending ways like Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Jughead's Time Police, but it seems as if these disparate tales aren't so disconnected.
The publisher has provided Newsarama with an advance look at this Wednesday's Jughead's Time Police #2, which reveals the existence of another Jughead (apparently from classic Archie continuity) crossing over into this book.
In addition to that, Archie has shared a look at October's series finale covers, revealing even more Jugheads from across the publisher's line - even Cole Sprouse's Jughead from CW's Riverdale.
“Jughead Jones is one of the most singular, iconic dudes in pop culture history," said Jughead's Time Police writer Sina Grace.
"The idea that there could be multiple Jugs existing across a slew of time streams got my imagination buzzing with possibilities... what would happen if Jughead knew there were other Jugheads? From there, I cooked up a pretty wild tale that goes forward, backwards, left and right."
This week's Jughead the Hunger vs. Vampironica #3 also contains clues to an apparent crossover, with Chilling Adventures of Sabrina's titular witch showing up out of the blue in the issue's finale.
"Not a trick, a robot, a clone or a skrull... yeah, that is indeed Sabrina at the end of Jughead the Hunger vs. Vampironica #3," said series writer Frank Tieri. "Now as for what it all means, well... you’ll have to tune in for #4 to find out exactly what. But what I will say is this whole thing is much bigger than just werewolf Jughead or vampire Veronica. What fans are witnessing here is the introduction to not just an Archie horrorverse... but an Archie multiverse as well."
As Archie Comics' co-President Alex Segura tells Newsarama, this has been hinted at before - but this time they're going all in.
"There've always been lots of threads weaving through the Archie stories - from the early days of Little Archie to Archie 1 to New Archies, and these modern takes are no different. It was always a wink and a smile-type thing - that there was a bigger, greater Archie 'multiverse' out there," said Archie Co-President Alex Segura.
"Well, the winking stops here, as two of our biggest titles, Jughead the Hunger vs. Vampironica and Jughead's Time Police pull back the curtains to reveal that maybe, just maybe, there's an infinite spectrum of possibilities out there for Archie and his friends - and different, out-of-this-world versions of our beloved characters might just be a turn of the page away. Keep your eyes on what's next. It'll be big, and it won't be subtle."
