Three years after its seeming closure in the final moments of Secret Wars, the Ultimate Universe will be returning "in a big way" in September's Miles Morales: Spider-Man #10, according to series writer Saladin Ahmed.
"Without getting into too much detail, the Ultimate Universe returns in a big way with Miles Morales: Spider-Man #10," Ahmed tells Newsarama.
Since Secret Wars' finale in early 2016, the Ultimate Universe has appeared sparingly in the form of characters jumping to the main Marvel U, though a more substantial resurrection of the Ultimate Universe occurred briefly in the finale of Spider-Men II.
"And Miles is finally going to start to reckon with the weird history he has, coming from another dimension," Ahmed continued. "On the cover we see the Ultimate Green Goblin, a.k.a. Norman Osborn, in his monstrous form... but there's a force behind him that we only know as Ultimatum."
From this Mahmud Asrar-drawn cover, Ultimatum looks like the Ultimates' Hank Pym - or someone wearing his costume.
This new Ultimatum character also shares a name with a 2009 Ultimate Universe limited series by Jeph Loeb and David Finch which featured Magneto attempting to destroy the world after the apparent deaths of his childen, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.
The solicit for Miles Morales: Spider-Man #10 mentions "a mystery dating back to Miles' first appearance" that will be answered, and the reveal of a "terrifying villain destined to become one of Miles’ greatest adversaries."
For readers looking for answers, Miles' first appearance was in 2011's Ultimate Fallout #4. Incidentally, Ultimate Fallout #4 will be reprinted as Miles Morales #0 for Diamond's Halloween ComicFest this October.
"We're adding to Miles' rogue's gallery a villain who shares roots with him in the Ultimate U. It's going to be really exciting to bring out. I know fans have been wanting this crosssover."
Miles Morales: Spider-Man #10 is due out September 11.
