Batman writer Tom King recently added the New Gods movie to his resume, which he's writing alongside director Ava Duvernay. Now it seems he's expanding on his work outside of comic books with a TV show in development.
What's in the works? King couldn't say.
“I’m working on a DCU movie now (New Gods with Ava DuVernay) and a secret TV show thing that hasn’t been announced,” King told Entertainment Weekly. Back in July, news broke that an hour-long dystopian TV series called States of America written by Tom that is now in development with Topic Studios and Playground. King talked about it briefly on social media at the time, so given he says his "secret TV show thing" is unnannounced, it would seemingly infer a different project than States of America.
It's these projects, King explains, that led to a change to his planned 100-issue Batman run - a move that ultimately will lead King to leave the core Batman title to pen a 12-issue Batman/Catwoman series that King says will carry through the story he originally planned to tell.
“DC was kind enough to see that doing all that and a twice-monthly Batman would be tough. So they divided the Batman book into two monthly books, Batman and Batman/Catwoman," King explained. "Bat/Cat will complete this epic story we’ve been telling and lead to this game-changing moment I’ve been hinting at."
But what's going to happen in the core Batman title? Again, King couldn't say - but he did say it would be "very cool."
"Batman will…well, I can’t tell you, but it’s very cool," King said. "But, because of the beats that will be handled in Batman, I have more room for my storylines in Bat/Cat, which means that the 12 issues can cover all of the story that was part of the original plan.”
“I used to think Batman #100 was the biggest book I’d ever write," King concluded. "Now it’s Bat/Cat #12. Same issue, same artist, same impact, different name - slightly different.”
Along with this news, EW premiered a new cover for Batman #79 by Clay Mann, reproduced here with permission.
The next issue in the series, Batman #73, is due out June 19. Batman/Catwoman #1 launches in January.
