Disney XD has ordered a third season of the animated Marvel's Spider-Man show - with a slight title change to Marvel's Spider-Man: Maximum Venom. First reported by Deadline, Spider-Man: Maximum Venom is anticipated to debut in spring 2020.
"This is the most epic conflict in the history of Marvel Animation," said Cort Lane, senior vice president, Marvel Animation & Family Entertainment. "We planted the seeds in two seasons of Marvel’s Spider-Man and three seasons of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, but you don’t need to have watched them to be blown away by this all-out symbiote invasion. While a ton of guest heroes will be on hand, Peter Parker’s special link to Venom makes him the only hero who can tip the scales to save humanity."
The Venom symbiote appeared briefly in a 2017 episode of Spider-Man, discovered by NASA and given over to Horizon High for research purposes. That sample re-appeared in a 2018 episode of Guardians of the Galaxy, as Thanos goes to Horizon High to obtain the Venom symbiote.
The subtitle Maximum Venom is an apparent homage to the 1993 crossover event Maximum Carnage featuring Venom, Carnage, Spider-Man, and others.
The second-half of Spider-Man season 2 will debut this September, beginning with a five-part "Superior Spider-Man" based story-arc.
