Artist Geoff Shaw is exiting Guardians of the Galaxy earlier than expected, and doing it to work on a creator-owned book for Image Comics with frequent collaborator Donny Cates.

Cory Smith was scheduled to begin on the book with August's #8, but Marvel has now moved up his debut to July's Guardians of the Galaxy #7 - Shaw's originally-solicited last issue.

After posting art from Smith from that issue earlier day, Cates was asked the whereabouts of Shaw - revealing what had happened.

"Some writer stole him from me to go do this big weird Image Comics book," Cates tweeted. "(Hint: the writer is me)."

Cates and Shaw previously worked on a creator-owned book for Image called God Country, which is now being developed as a film with Cates writing the script. In comics, Cates and Shaw segued from that to the hit Thanos arc "Thanos Wins."

Neither Cates nor Shaw have released any details about their upcoming Image book together.
