The first trailer for the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie dropped this week - and to say fans had a mixed reaction to the venerable video game hero's character design would be an understatement.

Spawning thousands of reactions, jokes, and memes, the human-like design is a big departure from Sonic's video game roots. But director Jeff Fowler says fans should rest assured they've been heard - and Sonic's look will change for the final film.

"Thank you for the support. And the criticism. The message is loud and clear," Fowler said on Twitter. "You aren't happy with the design & you want changes. It's going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the best he can be...."

Fowler didn't elaborate on how the changes would shape up, or when fans could expect to get a glimpse of the updated speedster.

Sonic the Hedgehog is due out in theaters November 8.
