Laura Donnelly has been cast in the lead role of Amalia True for Joss Whedon's HBO show The Nevers, according to Deadline. No photo of Donnelly was available at press time.

"Laura Donnelly has charisma, wisdom and an anarchic precision that not only captures Amalia but defines her," said Whedon. "She’s fierce and she’s funny – and I need both for the journey ahead."

The Nevers follows a group of Victorian women who "find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world" according to the Hollywood trade.

Joss Whedon will write and direct The Nevers, with long-time collaborators Jane Espenson and Doug Petrie onboard as co-writers.

Donnelly comes to The Nevers following roles in Starz' Outlander and the upcoming Fox Searchlight film Tolkien.

HBO has not announced a release date for The Nevers.
