A pair of Superman spin-off limited series will land this summer, focusing on Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, respectively, new details as per The L.A. Times.
First up, writer Greg Rucka and artist Mike Perkins will create Lois Lane, based on the iconic Daily Planet reporter (and Superman's wife) who Rucka calls "the best investigative reporter in the DC [Universe].”
“This is our truth, and this is what the book is about," Rucka told The Times. “Lois is often described as fearless, but that’s a mistake, because it implies that nothing frightens her. There’s plenty that frightens her; the difference is that it never stops her. She was like that before Superman entered her life, and so she remains.”
“[Lois] chooses to believe in her own abilities — her own prowess — to solve those problems that may seem unsurmountable,” added Perkins. “Lois is after the truth no matter what side of the political divide her person of interest stands on. That’s some pretty potent, powerful attributes for a portrayal of integrity in the days of ‘fake news’.”
Meanwhile, writer Matt Fraction and artist Steve Lieber will launch Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen, which focuses on Jimmy's work as a Daily Planet vlogger - and the trouble he causes.
“Jimmy's videos are basically the only thing keeping the lights on at the Planet anymore,” Fraction explained. “They have to let him keep doing his thing because it's the only thing that pays the bills." However, Fraction added that Jimmy's work is also "really expensive” for the newspaper, thanks to the Daily Planet's fiscal responsibility for the damage Jimmy's schemes cause.
“I think there's a lot of storytelling power in the juxtaposition of the ordinary and the extraordinary, and Jimmy is all about that,” Lieber chimed in. "It’s a chance to be funny in the world full of much larger than life characters.”
Both Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen have held down ongoing series before, with the classic Silver Age iteration of Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen playing a key role in Jack Kirby's Fourth World Saga.
The creative teams will debut their takes on their characters in a pair of short stories as part of May 29's Superman: Leviathan Rising Special. From there, both Lois Lane and Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen will launch in July, running for 12 issues apiece.
