The Walt Disney Company is re-evaluating all of the Fox movies following the completed acquisition of 21st Century Fox, according to Dark Phoenix writer/director (and long-time X-Men producer) Simon Kinberg. When asked specifically about the beleaguered Gambit film starring Channing Tatum, Kinberg told Variety that he thinks or hopes the film will still happen.
"All of the movies at Fox are being evaluated," Kinberg said. "I love the idea of Channing playing Gambit. I think we have a great script for it and I think it’s a role he was born to play. It’s a character I grew up loving and I know the fans love. So I suspect, I hope it will happen."
Kinberg was previously known to be a producer on Gambit, but in this new report Variety identifies him also as the film's screenwriter.
With Disney's acquisition of Fox, Kingberg said he expects crossovers between franchises. Kinberg has worked extensively with Disney on their Star Wars films.
"There will be a lot of mixing and merging now and I’m all for it and excited to see," Kinberg said.
When asked for specific crossover he'd personally like to see crossover with the X-Men, had some very specific ideas for Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man.
"I would say probably either somebody from Wakanda or Iron Man. I mean I love [Robert Downey Jr.]," Kinberg said. "I’ve worked with him. I love what he does with that character. I feel like he created the tonal template for the MCU with the first Iron Man movie. And so the notion of Iron Man popping up in X-Men or Iron Man interacting with Deadpool is pretty exciting."
