A new promo image for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 (via Marvel.com) depicts the cast in the familiar poses of Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper," his famous painting depicting the final meal of Jesus Christ and his Apostles.
Though there's not a one-for-one ratio of figures in the image, the castmembers shown land in poses that somewhat correspond to figures from da Vinci's fresco.
Notably, Coulson seems to take on the role of Judas, traitor to Jesus - whose pose is, in this case, mimicked by Mack, the new head of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Coulson apparently died at the end of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5, but a new character identical to him appeared in the season 6 trailer, with actor Clark Gregg highlighting the mystery as an important conceit of the upcoming season.
There's one immediate possibility that springs to mind. Could this be the fourth Skrull that emerged from the ocean on Earth alongside Talos in Captain Marvel - the one that apparently escaped capture or accounting for in the film? A Skrull impersonated Coulson in the film, and although that Skrull was killed in the car with Nick Fury, given the presence of the Kree in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s overarching story, it's not impossible the show would go to that well.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 is scheduled for a May debut - though no specific date has been announced.
