In a new zombie picture book, Mauricio “Mo” Romero is a young zombie with a deep, dark secret: he loves vegetables. But everyone knows that zombies don’t eat veggies! Can Mo’s special gazpacho convince his carnivorous parents to like vegetables? In both English and Spanish, Zombies Don’t Eat Veggies (April 2019, Children’s Book Press/Lee & Low Books), created by Megan and Jorge Lacera, is funny, scary, and gross…but it’s also a sweet story about belonging and family love, even when you’re a little bit different.

Megan and Jorge Lacera are a debut husband-wife team who run their own creative studio, Studio Lacera. They were inspired to create Zombies after struggling to find books that reflect their family. “We are multicultural, messily bilingual, funny, imperfect, quirky, a bit stubborn, always loving,” says Megan Lacera. “But, wow is it tough to find books that feel like our family in the books that we read.”

As a big fan of pop culture, comics, and zombie movies, Jorge rarely saw Latino kids as the heroes or leads and wanted to incorporate that need into their projects. “It’s our passion and intention to create books that include all types of kids and families. [Zombies Don’t Eat Veggies] is just the beginning.”

Zombies Don’t Eat Veggies earned a starred review from Kirkus Reviews, which calls this title, “tasty and homegrown… a lightly bilingual book that feels inclusive not only for Latinx kids, but also for different eaters and for those who aren't afraid of gory, monster-themed humor.”
