CBS All Access has hired Star Trek: Discovery director Hanelle Culpepper to direct the pilot of its in-development untitled Jean-Luc Picard-centric Star Trek spin-off.
Culpepper will be the first woman to direct a Star Trek pilot, though many women have directed episodes of other series.
“Hanelle is a gifted and dynamic filmmaker whose directorial choices are always deeply rooted in character,” said Star Trek producer Alex Kurtzman in a statement (via TheWrap). “I’ve been a huge fan of her work since she started with us on ‘Discovery,’ and she’s the perfect person to re-introduce the beloved character of Picard to longtime fans and new viewers alike. We’re thrilled she’s joining our Trek family on this next adventure.”
The untitled series will focus on an older Picard grappling with the path his life has taken. No premiere date has been announced.
