Marvel Comics is launching a new line of serialized audiobooks and e-books with Serial Box featuring original stories starring Black Panther, Thor, Black Widow, Jessica Jones, and more, according to Variety. The first project will be a Thor serial by editor Alex de Campi and the writing team of Aaron Stewart-Ahn (Mandy), Brian Keene, Jay Edidin, and Yoon Ha Lee.
"Over the last 80 years, Marvel has grown to become a lifestyle for every kind of fan around the world - but it all started from serialized storytelling," Marvel publisher John Nee. "We were impressed by the quality and creativity of Serial Box’s content, and we are excited for both Marvel and Serial Box fans to experience these new stories together each week."
Serial Box plans to offer these Marvel stories as TV-style serial seasons with new chapters released each week. The cost would be $1.99 per episode, or the entire season for an average price of $13.99.
"We are thrilled that Marvel is entrusting us to extend and expand the story worlds for these beloved characters,” said Serial Box CEO/co-founder Molly Barton. “Our writer teams could not be more excited to share the new stories with listeners and readers everywhere.”
This initiative follows the recent Wolverine: The Long Night scripted serialized podcast by writer Benjamin Percy with Stitcher, which is currently being adapted as a serialized comic book, with a podcast sequel on the way. Back in the mid-1970s, a Fantastic Four radio serial adapted the early Stan Lee and Jack Kirby issues - with a unique cast including Bill Murray as the Human Torch and narration by Stan Lee.
