Cullen Bunn is no stranger to the big events of the Marvel Universe, and now he’s guiding a key piece of War of the Realms as the Asgardians of the Galaxy join the fray against Malekith’s forces.
And while they’ll jump in with April’s #8, it’s May’s just-revealed Asgardians of the Galaxy #9 that holds an important piece of the puzzle in a Valkyrie-centric story.
But what’s going on in that story? It’s so secret Bunn could only confirm to Newsarama just how important Valkyrie – and Asgardians #9 - are to War of the Realms.
Newsarama spoke to Bunn about Asgardians of the Galaxy #9, delving into what’s at stake for Valkyrie and the team – and sussing out clues about where the Asgardians fit in to the larger tapestry of War of the Realms.
Newsarama: Cullen, the Asgardians of the Galaxy are uniquely poised to get involved in War of the Realms. How do they fit into this multidimensional war?
Cullen Bunn: As War of Realms erupts, the Asgardians are on their way back to Asgard and Midgard. They are armed with a powerful weapon - one that Loki himself forged to use in the battles to come--but they are caught off guard by the suddenness and viciousness of Malekith's attack. There is a turn of events in this arc that will shake the Asgardians to their very core.
Nrama: Valkyrie is at the center of this arc. What’s going on with her?
Bunn: Oh, how I wish I could tell you. Seriously, almost any answer I could give about Valkyrie would be redacted. She's very important to War of the Realms and to this book. I obviously love this character a great deal. I've been writing her stories for almost as long as I've been working for Marvel. I think I've written one of my favorite Valkyrie issues here.
Nrama: And what’s been going on with her human counterpart, Annabelle Riggs?
Bunn: Well, there can't be a Valkyrie story without Annabelle. As this arc unfolds, we'll see their relationship change and evolve. The two are going to have a heart to heart about what it means to be a hero, a human, and a Valkyrie.
Nrama: You co-created Annabelle in Fearless Defenders. What’s it like to come back to her, and bring her into an event like War of the Realms?
Bunn: I'd write Annabelle Riggs stories until the day I die if I could. She's a fun character for me. And that's not even taking the Valkyrie of it all into account. I knew when I started working on this book that Annabelle would be present. That brought its own set of complications, but I'm happy with the way the book has shaped up because of her involvement.
Nrama: Malekith is behind War of the Realms, but what are Valkyrie and the Asgardians of the Galaxy up against in #9 and in this story?
Bunn: Again, I cannot reveal anything about #9. I can talk about #8, in which the Asgardians side with the heroes of the Marvel Universe against Malekith's forces. I can talk a little bit about #10, which sees Angela facing what might be her greatest foe. But I cannot speak a word about issue #9. It's that big of a deal.
Nrama: You’ve written characters throughout the Marvel Universe through numerous crossovers. What sets a story like Asgardians of the Galaxy and a crossover like War of the Realms apart?
Bunn: What I like about War of the Realms is how it has been such a slow burn build up. It's been coming for ages. Now that it's here, it is going to hit fast and hard! Asgardians of the Galaxy has, to some degree, been building to this moment, too. The adventures from the very first issue all come to a head here in this tie-in arc. And, while it's a tie-in, I'm bringing in as much character drama as I possibly can!
Nrama: Bottom line, what makes this a must-read arc for Marvel fans?
Bunn: This arc covers a lot of ground, and it will see some major changes for the stars of Asgardians of the Galaxy. You know the old saying: nothing will be the same. It definitely applies here!
