X-Men film producer Lauren Shuler-Donner says she once had plans to do an entirely female centric X-Women movie through 20th Century Fox, though her plans ultimately fell through.
“I frankly wanted to see an X-Women movie,” Shuler-Donner told Decider while discussing the franchise she helped spearhead with 2000's X-Men. “I didn’t get it through. But I think that would be cool. I think - not to have no guys in it, you have to have guys in it - but to make instead of Charles and Magneto at the helm it’ll be whomever. Kitty Pryde and Illyana [Rasputin]. Something like that.”
Even though Shuler-Donner's idea never came to fruition, the filmmaker says there's still plenty of room for such a movie.
“It’s time [for female superhero movies] now, absolutely,” she said.
The X-Men films are in a transition period with the fate of several unproduced films up in the air, thanks to Disney's impending purchase of some 21st Century Fox assets which will bring the X-Men film rights back to Marvel.
