Veteran X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner has offered an update on 21st Century Fox's planned X-Men spin-off movies, telling Deadline the decision whether to move forward on any of the in-develpment films will likely lie entirely with Disney and Marvel Studios’ once Disney’s purchase of certain portions of Fox is completed.
Shuler Donner specifically addressed the fate of Channing Tatum's long in-development Gambit film, saying whether it moves forward will be up to Disney and Marvel, with no movement on either likely to happen till after the buyout is complete.
Further, Shuler Donner spoke about Fox's New Mutants film, which is currently scheduled for an August 2 theatrical release, but which rumor has it according to Deadline could be pushed to Hulu rather than receiving a full release.
“They worked hard on it," Shuler explained. "I want to see it released (theatrically), I’d hate to see it thrown at Hulu."
As for Marvel and Disney's overall plans for the X-Men, Shuler Donner says she believes the franchise is in good hands with Marvel's Kevin Feige, who worked alongside Shuler Donner on the first X-Men film.
“Kevin (Feige) and I started the first movie, he worked for me, he has a great story sense when it comes to weaving each world together, I trust him and I trust where he will take it," Shuler Donner said. However, she was quick to clarify she doesn't know what's planned, saying “I don’t know what Kevin is thinking, I think he’s still dealing with the wealth of characters and trying to make sense of it all.”
