Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Watiti's name has been a popular choice among fans to take the reins of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 from writer/director James Gunn who was fired from the film last year. However the New Zealand filmmaker says that option is off the table for him.
“Nope. Not doing that movie,” Waititi said during a Television Critics Association event (via TheWrap). “I’m hanging out with [Marvel] still. Talking about new stuff, but I don’t know what that might be yet. I want to do another movie.”
“For me, that’s James’ film,” Waititi elaborated. “Going into something like that, which has got his stamp all over it, it would feel like going into someone’s house and saying ‘Hey, I’m your new dad.'”
Waititi's reported comments did not include any indication of what his further Marvel Studios projects could be, or whether those talks might include another Thor film. Waititi has recently been working with another Disney studio, Lucasfilm, directing an episode of the upcoming Disney+ Star Wars TV series The Mandalorian.
Guardians star Chris Pratt was the last core castmember to speak on the status of Vol. 3, vowing the film would be produced, though its unclear if Marvel Studios has a current timetable for the movie.
