Insomniac Games' Marvel's Spider-Man PlayStation 4 game was the sixth best-selling game of 2018, according to the market research company the NPD Group. According to a recent report, the top five games that preceded Spider-Man were (in order): Red Dead Redemption 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, NBA 2k19, Maddn NFL 19, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Spider-Man's success - despite only coming out in September - is even more notable as it was the highest selling superhero game year-by-year since 2004's Spider-Man: The Movie 2 (which was the fifth best-selling game of that year). Factor out non-PS4 sales (since Spider-Man was a PS4 exclusive), the game was the third best-selling of 2018 behind Red Dead Redemption 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.
Bandai Namco Games' Dragon Ball: Fighterz was the 17th best-selling game of 2018, reports NPD.
Overall, the the U.S. game industry raked in $16.670 billion in sales in 2018, a 13% increase over the precious year but still behind 2011's landmark $17.4b landmark year. In 2018, $7.1b was reportedly taken in on software, $5.1b on hardware, and $1b on accessories and game cards.
