Sony Pictures has formally begun development on a sequel to 2018's Venom, according to Variety. Venom co-writer Kelly Marcel has reportedly been tapped to write (and executive produce) the sequel - for what is described as a "significant" price.
Tom Hardy previously said that his contract includes the option for two sequels. Variety reports that Michelle Williams and Woody Harrelson are expected to reprise their roles as Anne Weying and Cletus Kasady, respectively.
The Hollywood trade goes on to say, however, that Venom director Reuben Fleischer might not return for a sequel due to his filming Zombieland Too; that film began production this month for a October 11, 2019 release. He is also reportedly attached to film two other films: Jekyll and The Regional Office is Under Attack.
To date, Venom has earned $855 million globally at the box office.
Sony previously reserved two 2020 dates - July 10 and October 2 - for unspecified Marvel-based films. The first Venom did well with its October 5, 2018 release date, so its conceivable it could look to repeat that with the October 2, 2020 date for the sequel.
