IDW Publishing is relaunching the long-running Transformers line with new creators, a new #1, and a new time period, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Novelist Brian Ruckley and artists Angel Hernandez and Ron Joseph are behind the upcoming Transformers relaunch, and doing it in a time before the long-running war between Autobots and Decepticons. This Transformers prequel will uncover a previously-unrevealed death that served as a catalyst to the Cybertronian War.
"We are eager to begin this new chapter in Transformers storytelling," said Hasbro's VP of Global Publishing Michael Kelly. "We are excited to begin a tale that will be accessible and appealing to readers unfamiliar with Transformers lore, while still providing the depth and drama that our longtime fans expect. It’s a big responsibility, but we’ve got the right team and the right characters to do it.”
Ruckley will make his comic book debut with March's Transformers #1, coming to the medium after success with his "The Godless World" prose trilogy. Hernandez and Joseph are both long-time IDW artists, working on the Star Trek and Micronauts titles.
Writing Transformers is "a real privilege" according to Ruckley, and "just as important, it’s an amazing opportunity for new readers to discover and explore one of the biggest universes — and one of the best casts of characters — that science fiction has to offer, and to get in right at the start of a truly epic saga.”
Transformers #1 is scheduled to debut this March 2019.
