Joel McHale has been cast as Starman in DC Universe's Stargirl live-action series, according to Variety. McHale will reportedly play Sylvester Pemberton - who in comic books was the Star-Spangled Kid and Skyman, but actually turned down the offer to become Starman. The Hollywood trade describes McHale as the "Golden Age Starman," however.
"A courageous and confident superhero, Starman is a member of the Justice Society of America," reads Variety's description of McHale's character. "He wields a mysterious anti-gravity weapon called the cosmic staff and has a longtime sidekick named Stripesy, who is better known as Courtney Whitmore’s stepfather, Pat Dugan."
In comic books, Stargirl was mentored by another Starman - Jack Knight. However she did have a connection to Pemberton; when she first became a superhero, she called herself the Star-Spangled Kid - in tribute to Pemberton. She eventually met Pemberton's sister, Merry.
McHale is best known for his role in Community and as the host of The Soup. McHale had a small role in Sony's Spider-Man 2 as Mr. Jacks.
Stargirl is anticipated to debut in the late summer of 2019 on the DC Universe streaming service.
