Alphonso "Mac" Mackenzie was named the MCU's new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. in 2018's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 finale on ABC, and now the actor behind that role, Henry Simmons, is getting fans inside the head of his character.

"Personally, I love the challenge of being the director of S.H.I.E.L.D.," Simmons tells TVLine. "Mack has worked side-by-side with the people he now leads, and that works to his advantage - he’s one of them."

Simmons joined the show in its second season, as a mechanic - but quickly rose through the ranks to be named by Coulson as his replacment in 2018. But Mack's position as being "one of them" could come back to bite the character in this new role.

"But the one thing that can hinder Mack’s ability to lead is his reluctance to put the people he loves in the line of danger," the actor said. "As a result, this may lead to Mack’s toughest decision as director. What sacrifices will be made?"

ABC shared a photo of Mack from season 6 - in what appears to be a more funded and furnished S.H.I.E.L.D. operation behind him.

Answers to that question - and much more - will come when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns for its 13-episode sixth season in summer 2019, after Avengers 4.
