E.C. Segar's Popeye the Sailor will be rebooted for his 90th birthday in 2019, and will show of his new look and attitude in a series of animated shorts and comic strips, according to the New York Times. In this revamp, Popeye is a "more youthful, environmentally resourceful fellow" who lives on a houseboat that was washed ashore.
Yes, he still eats spinach - in fact, he grows his own.
"He’s younger, but you can’t tell how old he is,” said King Features' President C.J. Kettler. “He’s not an old guy, he’s not a young guy, he’s somewhere in between. He’s still tough and fit and resilient and a champion of the underdog."
The first two-minute animated short debuted Sunday on YouTube, with 24 more planned.
As part of this, King Features is running a series of new online strips called Popeye's Cartoon Club with guest artists including Jeffrey Brown, Erica Henderson, Tom Neeley, Roger Langridge, Alex Hallatt, and Lar deSouza.
