Margot Robbie will portray Harley Quinn for the second time in Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), and this time, she's interested in exploring Harley's sexuality - as well as the nature of her relationship to Poison Ivy.
"If you read the comics you know that Poison Ivy and Harley have an intimate relationship," Robbie told PrideSource. "In some comics they convey it as a friendship; in other comics you can see that they’re actually sexually involved as a couple. I’ve been trying to – I would love to have Poison Ivy thrown into the universe, because the Harley and Poison Ivy relationship is one of my favorite aspects of the comics, so I’m looking to explore that on screen."
That said, it's unclear whether Poison Ivy might be a part of Birds of Prey or not. The rest of the principal cast includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, and Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya. Ewan McGregor will play the film's villain, Black Mask.
However, Robbie, who is also a producer on the film, did confess she's given great consideration to who might portray Ivy onscreen when the time comes.
"You know what? I’ve thought about it a lot and there’s no one person who springs to mind," Robbie said. "I’m pretty open-minded."
Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is scheduled for a February 7, 2020 theatrical release.
