Small Month, Big News1 of 12
February 2019 is shaping up to be a big month for Marvel. With multiple high profile launches, some big returns, and some potentially devastating endings throughout the publisher's just-released solicitations, Marvel has a lot of story crammed into the shortest month of the year.
Now that the solicitations are public, we've turned our magnifying glass on them to turn over all the tidbits of info hiding inside. Here's what we learned from Marvel's February 2019 solicitations.
Avengers Legacy2 of 12
It appears Marvel's "Legacy" numbering for Avengers will continue on to the February-launching limited series Avengers: No Road Home.
A spiritual sequel to "Avengers: No Surrender," which ran in the core Avengers title earlier this year and which marked the return of the title to its original numbering, No Road Home will account for Avengers #708-718, according to co-writer Jim Zub on Twitter.
To accommodate, Zub says the core Avengers title, which runs concurrent with No Road Home, will skip ten numbers in its own "Legacy" indicia.
Missing Titles3 of 12
Two titles included in Marvel's January solicitations don't seem to have made it to February.
First there's Exiles. The solicit for January's #12 mentions the end of the title's arc, and with March's Exiles Vol. 2 trade collecting the series through #12, that could mark the end of the title as well.
Then it looks like Domino, which was solicited for #10 in January, doesn't have an issue in February either. It does however have a trade coming out that collects the series through #10 - again, potentially meaning Domino will bow in January.
There's potential bad news in February's solicits too, as the solicitation for Runaways #18 foretells the end of the story "That Was Yesterday" - and also warns of the Runaways' possible "destruction."
One bit of good news however: Ms. Marvel seems to be back on track after a January skip month with #38 - the title's 5-year anniversary - solicited for February.
The Annotated Marvel Comics4 of 12
February will see the release of Marvels Annotated #1, apparently a fully annotated re-release of Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross’s Marvels that will release the series in its original four-issue monthly format.
Ross is known for sneaking tons of Easter eggs into his pages, and in the 25 years since the initial release of Marvels he’s run down some of the things he and Busiek fit into Marvels.
Could this mark a new line of released classic stories with annotations from the creators?
Shatterstar Vs. Shatterstar5 of 12
The only thing that could make Shatterstar more stereotypically “X-Men” is if there were two of him. Thankfully, February’s Shatterstar #5 will do exactly that, as the solicitation portends a Shatty Vs. Shatty showdown.
So many blades, so few fingers…
Ravagers of the Galaxy6 of 12
It looks like February's Asgardians of the Galaxy #6 will bring back classic Guardian Yondu Udonta - but with an MCU twist.
The solicitation mentions that Yondu will show up to menace the Asgardians with a new group of Ravagers in tow - including Planet Terry, Pip the Troll, and Kammi.
Cosmic Superior Spider-Man7 of 12
Peter Parker’s been possessed of cosmic abilities before, thanks to Eternity’s Uni-Power. But what happens when a “Superior” Spidey gets that level of power?
We’ll find out in February’s Superior Spider-Man #3, when Otto Octavius takes on cosmic level power through unrevealed means to fight Galactus’ former herald Terrax.
Spider-Crisis8 of 12
2019 looks to continue Marvel’s focus on the Spider-Man franchise, with not one but two major storylines featuring Peter Parker kicking off in February.
First, Amazing Spider-Man #16 starts the story “Hunted” which will pit Spidey against Kraven once again (a fight that usually gets dark and deadly). Then Spider-Man/Deadpool #46 launches “INFINITE HOUSE OF CIVIL yet SECRET CRISIS WAR INVASIONS”, which the solicitation says will “shake the foundations of the Marvel Universe.”
War of the Vampires9 of 12
Avengers #700 brought Blade back to the Marvel Universe and into the Avengers with Janet Van Dyne breaking the Daywalker out of Castle Dracula.
It seems the ramifications of that will play out starting in February’s Avengers #14, which kicks off an arc titled “War of the Vampires.”
Double Danvers10 of 12
Marvel is doubling up on Carol Danvers in February, with a one-shot titled Captain Marvel: Braver & Mightier (or is it Stronger & Mightier as it’s listed in the schedule portion of the solicits?) that will force Carol to make a “tough decision” to fend off an alien invasion.
Meanwhile, over in her core title, February’s Captain Marvel #2 sends Carol into an “apocalyptic wasteland” where Manhattan’s Roosevelt Island once was. To defend it, she’ll team up with Spider-Woman, Hazmat, and new allies.
X-Men United11 of 12
Marvel’s been teasing the return of the adult Cyclops for a while now (his story will be at the center of January’s Uncanny X-Men Annual #1), but the joint solicitation for February’s Uncanny X-Men #11 & 12 makes it official – Scott Summers is coming back to life, and back to the X-Men.
What’s more, the solicitation also puts the newly resurrected Wolverine back with the X-Men alongside Cyclops, with his recent identity issues apparently to be resolved by then.
