Artist Fran Strukan has shared his designs of what he calls Gilman - the creature from Creature from the Black Lagoon - who is slated to appear in his upcoming Shape of Elvira limited series from Dynamite Entertainment.
"Given Elvira’s history as a 'horror host,' homage is always on the table. (The alliteration was an accident, but I stand by it.)," series writer David Avallone tells Newsarama. "A certain Oscar-winning fish story seemed worthy of parody, and a natural setting for Elvira. More personally, I’ve been in movie production for decades (I won’t say how many) and doing a series that takes place mostly on a movie set lets me mine those rich experiences for the story."
Shape of Elvira will be one of Strukan's first works for North America artists, and follows a tradition of talented European artists before him according to Avallone.
"Fran’s work is really amazing. You can see the clear influence of Moebius, and that whole generation of great European artists," says the writer. "He has a flair for both emotions and environments, which is a great combination in an artist. I can’t wait to see the pages."
Shape of Elvira #1 (of 4) is scheduled to go on sale January 16, 2019.
