Anjelika Washington has been cast as an unspecified but "familiar" DC Comics character for DC Universe's Stargirl.
“Anjelika Washington is a bright, funny and unbelievably talented actor and I’m thrilled to have her join the cast alongside Brec,” said series creator/showrunner Geoff Johns. “We’re withholding the character she’s playing for now, but it’ll be one familiar to DC Comics fans!”
Washington is scheduled to be a series regular on the show, alongside the titular star Brec Bassinger. Stargirl was previously said to include the Justice Society of America.
"Stargirl follows high school sophomore Courtney Whitmore as she inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past," reads DC Universe's description of the show. "This new drama reimagines Stargirl and the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America, in an unpredictable series. The project focuses on the character that started executive producer Geoff Johns’ career as a comic book writer when he created her in 1999, lovingly inspired by his late sister, who was killed in a 1996 plane explosion."
Washington recently starred in the Amazon pilot The Legend of Master Legend, and has had appearances on Hulu's Runaways, Showtime's Shameless, and CBS' Young Sheldon.
Stargirl is anticipated to debut next year on the DC Universe streaming service.
