Overlord director Julius Avery has signed on to helm 20th Century Fox's long-gestating Flash Gordon film, according to Deadline. Avery will reportedly take over from the previously-reported director Matthew Vaughn, who will instead produce the film alongside John Davis and C.J. Kettler.
Flash Gordon was created in the 1930s by cartoonist Alex Raymond, and has been adapted into movies and TV shows on several occasions.
Fox has been actively developing a Flash Gordon movie since as far back as 2010, originally hiring director Breck Eisner to lead the film.
As the Walt Disney Company's planned acquisition of 21st Century Fox is still on-schedule to be finalized in 2019, this film would assumedly eventually be produced under the larger Disney umbrella.
