Kraven the Hunter screenwriter Richard Wenk is just starting the process of crafting the film's screenplay - but he's already planning to pit the classic villain directly against Spider-Man, unlike Sony's Venom film in the same universe.
"I’m just starting it. It’s an interesting world and a great character. It’s in the Spider-Man universe – it’s going to adhere very closely to the lore of Kraven the hunter, and he’s going to come face-to-face with Spider-Man," Wenk told Discussing Film's The Mutuals. "I’m just beginning the process. Because it’s a big IP, Marvel, and a big world, there are a lot of hurdles you have to clear before you can even actually start writing."
"It’s a new world for me," the writer continued. "But what’s nice about it is, it’s a very grounded character. He doesn’t have a lot of crazy superpowers. It’s more grounded, which is closer to what I like to do."
Despite the part of the project that's still up in the air, however, Wenk says everyone involved in the film has one major inspiration: the classic Spider-Man tale "Kraven's Last Hunt."
"You have to look at everything to soak it in, but what we’re all circling is 'Kraven’s Last Hunt.' Whether this is the precursor to that movie, whether it will be included, we’re figuring that out. We could do it like Kill Bill, and split it into two movies. It’s all in the mix.
"What’s nice about it is, everybody wants to make the right movie, a classic movie," Wenk explained. "Nobody’s rushing to churn out a character movie just because it’s a part of that world. It’s nice to see everyone hunker down and ask 'What’s the right movie?'"
"It’s the first time people will see Kraven, but not the last," Wenk concluded cryptically.
Kraven is currently in development for an unspecified release date.
