Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director James Gunn is in talks to write and direct Suicide Squad 2 for Warner Bros., according to TheWrap.
The Hollywood trade cites an unnamed source who said Gunn is "in talks" to direct the sequel.
Gunn was fired from directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in July after offensive tweets from his past resurfaced. Marvel Studios is reportedly moving forward with Gunn's script for the film, though it has been delayed indefinitely while the search for a director is underway.
The cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy films lobbied for Gunn's rehiring, but Disney chairman Bob Iger held firm on the decision. Gunn previously expressed interest in writing and directing a Thunderbolts film for Marvel Studios, which in some comic book versions carries a similar premise to Suicide Squad.
Mel Gibson was previously in talks to direct Suicide Squad 2. No projected release date for the film has been announced.
