Marvel Comics is launching a new Captain Marvel ongoing this January ahead of the March 8, 2019 live-action film. First reported by the New York Times, the new Captain Marvel series is by writer Kelly Thompson, artist Carmen Carnero, and colorist Tamra Bonvillain.

"I think the character is incredibly important, maybe now more than ever," Thompson said.

After years primarly set in outer space, the new Captain Marvel series will primarily be set in New York City - and reconnect her with some old allies as well as offer some new ones.

"This first arc has some female guest stars in an unexpected way,” Thompson said. "[The First issue also includes some] costume wierdness. It’s a little bit of a risk, but I think people are going to respond to it."

The only changes in the costume shown in this art are pouches added to Captain Marvel's sash, and a different boot design. Look for the "costume weirdness" reveal closer to the January release of Captain Marvel #1.
