Suicide Squad writer/director David Ayer has apologized for one of his film's most controversial aesthetic choices - the tattoo that reads "Damaged" on Joker's forehead.
Yes I have to fall on that sword. It was one step too far. https://t.co/WE80aWUTwy— David Ayer (@DavidAyerMovies) September 24, 2018
Ayer previously explained the motivation behind the tattoo, tying it to Joker taking a particularly bad beating from Batman as a result of the murder of Robin.
"Joker killed Robin and Batman basically smashes his teeth out and locks him up in Arkham Asylum," Ayer told Empire in 2016. "It’s in the asylum where Joker would have done the ‘damaged’ tattoo as a message to Batman saying, ‘You’ve damaged me. I was so beautiful before and now you’ve destroyed my face.’ That’s where the grill comes from.”
Jared Leto is signed on to reprise his role as the Joker in a currently in-development team-up film with Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn.
