Joaquin Phoenix says he isn't paying attention to what fans are saying about his upcoming role as Joker in a self-titled 2019 film.

"I could care less. I don’t really think that much about what people think. Who cares, who cares?" Phoenix told IndieWire. "My approach to every movie is the same. What I’m interested in is the filmmaker and the idea of the character."

Coming into the superhero movie genre isn't a negative - the actor said it's about characters and chemistry.

"If there’s something that feels unique, then I don’t really care what genre it is, what budget it is. Those things aren’t important," said Phoenix. "What gets my interest is examining people. Some of it is really f---ing simple. It’s chemistry, it’s like what you look for in a lover. You know it when it happens."

Phoenix, who is currently promoting his current film The Sisters Brothers, said he's already preparing for the Joker role ahead of an anticipated September 2018 start date.

Joker is scheduled to open in theaters October 4, 2019.
